I collect vintage children's books. I adore Enid Blyton especially, as I know many others do judging by the amount of Enid Blyton collections I have seen popping up all over blogland this week. I also delight in The Bobbsey twins series, Rupert anuals and Milly Molly Mandy to name a few of my very faves. My all time favourite book is the now very politically incorrect Little Black Sambo. My well thumbed childhood copy was taken to Preschool by my little sister and promptly lost, never to be seen again. It is a rare and expensive book these days so I have never found another one to replace it...yet ;)
My Mum found me a Little Golden Book not long ago called The Boy and the Tiger which is the modern, more acceptable rewrite of the original Little Black Sambo. She handed it to me as a replacement for the lost original and told me to get over it. I love my Mum. And Tracey, I forgive you.
Just a small sample of my books...
Another more recent collection is my ever growing stash of retro fabrics. I adore the housewife prints and Dick and Jane fabrics. Michael Miller has gorgeous prints that defy the sewing scissors. One day I will use them....probably....maybe :)
Other collections of mine would be children and dust.
This totebag is one I made over the weekend. It is a little long for an everyday one, but perfect for library books or magazines. One to use when I wait for the kids at their varous after school activities.
Lastly I leave you with Connor's dinner creation from last night. He calls him 'Monster Mash'. Glad to know one of the children has inherited my love of art.
Love the retro fabric Kerryn.
ReplyDeleteLittle Black Sambo was my all time favourite too. I lost mine as well but I have found another copy (can't remember where I got it though) but it is the politically incorrect one.
ReplyDeleteLet me know when you are going to RAK one of those bags....coz I am IN baby! :)
ReplyDeleteOMG...a fellow addict....I have SO many enid blytons...St Clares and Malory Towers, famous five, Five findouters and dog, and I didn't know anyone else EVER read milly molly mandy except me!!! You're a conniseur of fine literature girl!!!!
ReplyDeleteHAHAHA I LOVE that mash!!! What a classic! Oh, I remember being read 'Little Black Sambo' at primary school. Loved it! If I ever find a copy I will send it your way. I actually found some vintage flannelette in an Op Shop the other day that has gollywog print all over it - I figure that is also something that isn't seen around too much these days either - not sure what I'll do with the fabric yet - there's quite a lot of it!!! And hey, your bag turned out great. Love the fabric. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteOne of my books "The Big Tidy Up" suffered the same fate, though my mother (a teacher) believes it was her that left it at school never to be seen again. It is $200+ on Amazon now - though it is being republished next year for the first time since 1970's.
ReplyDeleteI also loved Little Black Sambo - I think I might still have it somewhere! I love the old books - political incorrectness and all!
Love the bag too Kerryn, lokos perfect for a baby carry all :)
ReplyDeleteI'll keep a look out for that book too should i come accross it at the second hand shop or the like :)
